I was thinking the same thing last week! The electrician had to move my refrigerator to get to an outlet and I was SO embarrassed! My mother-in-law cleans hers probably once a month... besides being worse then cleaning the bathroom - those appliances are HEAVY! I'm with you... once every 3 years is good enough :)

You should clean around these areas. A couple of months ago we had an issue with our ice maker and had to vacuum out the dust. This saves energy in your appliances. You should also dust the top of the fridge as well. We have allergies and asthma and its best to get rid of as much dust and dirt as possible. Check out this site, it has some information on how to take care of your appliances. Here is something they say about the fridge...

"Refrigerator

Refrigerators all brands: Admiral, Amana, Bosch, Fisher & Paykel, Frigidare, GE, Gibson, Kitchenaid, General Electric, Maytag, Hotpoint, Jennair, Miele, Roper, Tappan, Thermador, Viking, Westinghouse, Whirlpool, Sears, Kenmore.

Keep the top of the refrigerator clear and make sure there is at least a 1/2-in. clearance on sides. Make sure the refrigerator is level or tilted back slightly so the door closes completely. Once a month Clean door gasket with 1 tsp. of baking soda dissolved in a quart of warm water. Besides cleaning the gasket, it will keep it soft and pliable. Two times a year Clean coils with a condenser coil brush ($6), available at an appliance dealer. The coils are usually behind the snap-out grill at the front bottom of the unit. On older models, they're located in the back and are partially covered by cardboard. Unplug the unit first so you don't strike the moving fan. Even when the unit is unplugged, avoid disturbing the insulation or bending the fan blades, which could damage the fan. If your pets shed, do this four times a year. Test the door gasket. A leaky gasket wastes energy and shortens the life of the compressor. Close the refrigerator door on a dollar bill at various places along the door, and pull lightly. If the bill does budge, replace the gasket (about $60). Peel back the gasket enough to loosen the retainer strip screws and slip a new one in place. Change the inline water filter on the ice-maker after turning off the source water. Use a bucket to catch water in the system. Buy recommended replacement filters. Once a year Slide the refrigerator out and vacuum around and beneath it. Left unattended, this dirt will end up on the coils."

As you can see they say once a year at least. So you don't have to do it every month like your mom may, only if you would like to.

The first link I put on here also has info on how to take care and clean your other appliances.

I don't clean under the appliances as often as is needed. I don't know that they need cleaned once a month, but it sure does save a lot of time and appliance energy to do it that often.

Cleaning the coils on the fridge makes the thing work better and more energy efficiently!! Cleaning the back of the dryer will prevent some fires!!!

Some people are door knob polishers!! My sister is one of these type people. She complains that her house is filthy, but one could actually put the food directly on the floor and eat and be totally safe.

Then there are the people who want things to look nice, but don't put in a lot of obvious effort in getting it there.

Then there are the rest of us slobs who have better things to do with our time than to clean every little corner and crevice in our houses. I totally resent the time needed to even wash dishes removed from my crafting and other projects!!!

I do this every spring and fall for the washer and dryer and quaterly for the stove and fridge. It makes for easier upkeep when you keep it clean. Also cuts down on the chance that food is trapped under the apliances for little critters and bugs to invade the home for.

I'm sorry. I clean mine quarterly mainly because I want my appliances to last. I know that a build up of dust is not good for them so I clean them. How often you do it though, I think is a personal preference.

You're not the only one. Moving large applicances to clean beneath and behind them is SO far down on my list of priorities!

You should do it at least every six months or every year at the most.. If you don't you will get bugs in your kitchen...
