Question:
BED BUGS! FEELING HELPLESS!?
2011-10-21 19:52:38 UTC
So I have been getting bites for over a month now.
We've torn our house apart looking for bed bugs...
&& Nothing!
We've also had an exterminator come in and they found nothing!
I've washed all clothing.
Got rid of clutter.
And Have been vacuuming twice a day.

I DON'T KNOW WHAT ELSE TO DO?

I am pregnant and have a baby on the way and I want these little things
gone before he comes.
What else can I do?
I don't want to treat it ourselves and the exterminator won't treat either
unless they have evidence.

Get a second opinion from a different exterminating company. If they don't find anything either, it's probably mosquitoes (if you're in a warmer climate & they're still around) or spiders. I was getting a bunch of bites, too. I know some of them were those stupid tiger mosquitoes, but some were some kind of super small spider. I cleared their webs out & stopped getting bitten. Their webs were really small, too - hard to spot. I actually found a web on the underside of my bed along the frame.

Sorry to hear you are going through this - with your pregnancy you do need the extra worry. I would suggest installing passive bed bug monitors. Just like a CO2 detector they are there for your peace of mind. We recommend the BBAlert - you check it for signs of bed bugs when you change your sheets. Speaking of signs of bed bugs - be sure you know what to look for (impossible to diagnose by the bite mark). Because bed bugs are masters at hiding, even professional pest control operators have a tough time finding the little suckers. The best indicators are fecal stains and cast skins. Check out the pictures on the first link below so you can be sure you will recognize these signs. It is also a great forum, frequented by international bed bug experts. The second link is a University of Kentucky paper on 'invisible itches' - worth a read as it could point you to other causes, e.g. some people are allergic to the hairs of the carpet beetle larvae and the reaction mimics an insect bite (that's the third link below). On the plus side, with all the vacuuming your place is really clean and vacuuming is great exercise. One other idea - is a bed bug dog - if available in your area. Check yellow pages and google search for your area. Disclaimer: I own and operate a bed bug dog detection business, Bed Bug Mutts, in Vancouver BC Canada.

I would insist they treat the room anyway! Those things seem to be pretty good at hiding. It is your right as a tenant/home owner that you feel safe and secure in your place, so just demand a treatment. Show them the bites, explain about your being pregnant and the stress it is causing you. I had a simmilar experience a few months ago. I was covered in bites but there were no signs. I insisted that my land lord have the room treated regardless, and then a follow up treatment two weeks later. It's the only way to put your mind at ease. Good luck x

Sounds like you have allergies. Make an appointment with your doctor a.s.a.p.

Benadryl may help, but with your pregnancy I would check with your O.B.Y.N.

Better safe than sorry. Wish you all the best. Good luck!
