My fiance works around diesel equipment and while servicing a piece of equipment he got diesel fuel all over his coat. We have washed it on hot three times with arm and hammer laundry detergent, and the smell is still strong.

try putting a little bit of vinegar in the wash with the laundry soap, the white vinegar. I know it works with other odors.

good luck

This is a tough one, but not too tough to resolve.

Firstly, you must take it to Laundromat and use an industrial machine, your home machine isn't strong enough for this one. Secondly be prepared for at least three rounds of washing with Clorox 2 & Tide w/ febreeze, Tide w/downy, Gain w/ fabric softener, etc. Arm & Hammer just won't do it.

Unless this is a white coat that needs bleach, use cold water; hot water makes it easier for the oil to stay disoved in the coat, while cold seperates it from the fabric.

Even though you're using a detergent w/ fabric softener you need to add softener to the wash as well as the rinse cycle.

Trust me, my husband used to work on cars and I found myself at the laundrymat every week because I didn't want to mess up my machine.

Most of the answers here just cover up the odor from the fuel, you have to remove it...Wash it twice..put in the washer 2 cups of clear ammonia..Parsons or store brand..doesn't matter...let it wash through...then rewash items as you regularly would...I promise this will remove the odors and the grease from the diesel fuel.. and any stains from grease in general, this won't hurt his skin or ruin the clothes..I promise you.
